Austrias Wonder Years - Our 90ies

Austrian engineer Franz Viehböck becomes the first – and to this day only – “Austronaut” to travel into space, launching aboard a Russian Soyuz rocket. From above, he looks down on a world that is rapidly changing.

We dream of peace, yet witness war in the disintegrating Yugoslavia. A young Bosnian girl arrives in Vienna with her family. Alma Zadić remembers the overwhelming variety of chocolate in Austrian supermarkets – and the feeling of being welcomed: “As difficult as the 1990s were, they were still wonderful years for me, because that was when I discovered childhood.”

With Austria joining the European Union in 1995, we become part of a new Europe. Marwan Saba creates one of the first social media platforms, years before Facebook goes online. And snowboarder Claudia Riegler finally fulfils a dream after having been dropped from the national squads years earlier: “At some point I said to myself: I want more.”
